Westcord Fashion Hotel Amsterdam

I was fortunate to stay at the Westcord Fashion Hotel on Monday; my job took me overseas to Amsterdam and I was very thankful to enjoy everything the hotel had to offer after a snowy commute to the Netherlands.

The hotel is situated within the A10 ring road of Amsterdam; I found it perfectly placed in Leidseplein which is a 10 minute tram ride from the city centre and the same distance to Schiphol Airport or Amsterdam RAI

The arty hotel decor wouldn’t look out of place on an episode of ‘Eurotrash’; especially the toilet doors by the Bar which require you to push a bum/back sculpture on the door,  rather than a handle!

I really liked my room,  big comfy bed,  en suite bathroom with a sliding glass door along with the biggest bath I’ve been in for some time; overall the rooms are excellent value with great facilities,  gadgets and free WIFI Internet.

The bar food was reasonably priced and value for money,  the breakfast buffet was excellent.

Sadly, I didn’t get a chance to visit the Wellness Garden and its two sauna’s, Turkish steam room, indoor swimming pool.  The pool looked great!

I’d recommend the hotel for a romantic break more than a business trip; purely because the bath is definitely made for two!

Regardless. A very enjoyable stay!

Amsterdam

Amsterdam.   The culture shock that failed to arrive.

There’s more weed and titty bars in Croydon than there are here???

I walked around for two and a half hours last night and came to the following conclusions:

(*)  Dutch people are extremely nice but have a bloody silly language.

(*) There are SO many bikes here,  but the Dutch won fuck all in the Olympics for cycling?

(*)  The narrow houses by the canals are beautiful, but you’d have to be deformed or brought up drinking agent orange to fit in one.   Bugger all chance I’d even get through the front door!

(*) I still don’t like the smell of puff.

(*) The trams are very similar to Croydon, just minus the menacing little spastics who sit playing their shitty grime tunes on a CEX bargain phone.

Amsterdam,  a city with a distinct charm; a bit like Sir Jimmy Saville.

Liam Brady in BBC news sex change shocker!

The BBC website ‘Sportsday’ news feed has sensationally revealed that Liam Brady has undergone a sex change.

For all intents and purposes, the gender reassignment appears to have taken place during the course of the interview!?

The website confirms “Liam Brady,  57, says she will consider taking on another position at Arsenal when he departs as head of their youth development in May next year.”

Presumably, captain of Arsenal women’s first team??

Royalties due!?

image

My new dog leads arrived today; looks like the manufacturer are using my dogs image to sell their products?!? So that’s Flexi, HMV and Tintin! I reckon Cheeks should be due a cheque for royalties?!?

Whittakers Ascot Gold Cup Horse Racing Arcade Game

Whittakers ‘Ascot Gold Cup’ Arcade Game! What a blast from the past!

image

They had one of these machines down in Brighton Pier’s amusement arcade when I was a kid; I have many fond memories playing this little beauty for hours and hours!!!!

10p a go (just like your Mum!), you place a bet using the button on the console and select a horse between 1-5. The horses have increasingly higher wins as you run through the numbers:

1 – 10p
2 – 20p
3 – 40p
4 – 60p
5 – £2.50

The machine has each horse on a runner and randomly adjusts the speed of each neddy to try and outfox the punter. You can even decide to use the ‘double or quit’ feature if you are feeling particularly cocky!

They certainly don’t make them like this anymore!

Fringe finale – spoiler free

Spoiler free.

I was glad to see the Fringe series get a decent send off; I stuck through it during the slight dip that occurred halfway through and thought the final episode wrapped things up nicely.

There were so many of the things in the finale that reminded me of the first season,  which was obviously the point!   I can still remember being glued to the first season as they unveiled the pattern.
The emotional scenes between key players was also done extremely well and I am sad that I will not see John Noble portray Walter Bishop again because he created a legendary character.

Oh well!   Good bye Fringe,  gone,  but not forgotten!

Cheeks training in the snow

Cheeks loves the snow; I took the opportunity to take him out on his training lead to the park. Hopefully, I will start letting him off the lead in the coming months! Don’t think it’ll be long until he comes when called!

Dredd – 3D Blu-Ray Review

Just finished watching ‘Dredd’.

Drokk!  What a blast from the past!!!

‘Dredd’ reminded me of the good old days, when post-apocalyptic films didn’t always require a patronising and mind bending story about the self destructive qualities of humanity or attempt to squeeze a huge array of bland characters (played by ‘B’ list Hollywood stars) into pointless sub-plots.

In fact,  it reminded me of everything I loved about watching ‘Robocop’ or ‘Escape From New York’ as a kid.  Awesome,  life changing films for me.

I was a MASSIVE Judge Dredd comic fan growing up (and 2000AD!);  the comics were harsh and gritty in their portrayal of a futuristic ‘civilisation’ which is teetering  on the verge of collapse each and every day.

I’d religiously spend my holiday money in the 80’s on the comics;  usually purchased from an unsuspecting carrot crunching newsagent in Selsey High Street during the Summer holidays or from the comic shop within the indoor markets down by Reeves Corner in Croydon.

The trademark Judge Dredd story lines were always violent (yay!!) and laced with a fantastic sense of humour; they were as much tongue in cheek as they were shocking?

I often wonder if the politically reflective Judge Dredd comics would have been published today?   What with the terminal levels of unbalanced political correctness within the UK; expect Lord Vaz to start a crusade to retrospectively ban the comics, you read it here first!

So,  to the plot.

Mega City One is a reluctant oasis within the nuclear wasteland remnants of the United States of America; kept in check by the Judges, men and women who ruthlessly bring justice to those who break the law, without the need for trial or jury.

I thought it was fantastic how the story of the film completely centres around Judge Dredd and Judge candidate Anderson; it is simply a story about an average day of unrest in Mega City One where Anderson is under Dredds evaluation to become a fully empowered Judge?

They unwittingly become entangled in a block (a 200 storey tall apartment buildings) gang war where the Ma Ma gang (run by a crazy drugged up former hooker called Ma Ma) are looking to expand their influence in Mega City One using a drug which makes the brain think time has slowed to a fraction of a second.

The time delay drug made think of the effects of ‘cake’  as reported on ‘The Day Today’.   Look it up on YouTube later if you are unfamiliar!

Overall,  I thought the film was fucking fantastic and the no nosense way Dredd ended Ma Ma’s reign showed that the film was all about him.  Loved that.

Karl Urban is perfect as Dredd and it was awesome seeing him use the full arsenal of the Lawgiver (his gun!).   I also thought Olivia Thirlby was great as the psionic Judge Anderson and look forward to seeing the chemistry between them develop in future films.

What storylines will they nick for sequels?   The ‘Judge Child’  is a good candidate, personally,  I hope they go for Judge Death!  “The ssssseeentennnnce issss deaaaath!”

The 3D Blu-Ray version looks gorgeous and is a must own purchase,  buy it!
