The Innovative Homeless Man Who Lives In A Shelter Opposite My Office

Thought I’d dedicate my latest lunchtime blog entry to ‘ The Innovative Homeless Man Who Lives In A Shelter Opposite My Office’.

The gentleman in question has been residing in the abandoned car park opposite my office for the last few months; he’s probably about my age, average height, slim build, and now sports a rather bushy black beard.   He popped up in the Summer and has since built a little shanty town style shelter in the far corner of the abandoned tarmac, fully enclosed by a perimeter fence.

The shack he has built is situated underneath a large tree that has now shed all of it’s leaves; however it must have provided him with cool shelter on the warmer days that we enjoyed. OK, so that’s an exaggeration, Summer skipped us again this year, but it would have been a very good place to build a house had the heat wave kicked in!

The shack’s roof is made from a collection of signs and advertising boards, has no sides to speak of; but it seems to be doing the business.  The other intriguing thing about him is that he has been hanging his washing out over a metallic guard rail that he salvaged, and regularly beats his clothes to air them.  Almost Victorian in his daily living habits!

I have often mused where the man is originally from. He has a dark but grey complexion and high cheek bones with distinguished features; much like you’d see in parts of Iran, Afghanistan or possibly the more mountainous regions of Pakistan.  Maybe he’s from Bromley?  Who knows?  What I do know, is that this guy is living outside and the temperature is beginning to drop. He’s hardcore???

Then there’s also the consideration of his back story; is he a political dissident who has fled his native country perhaps?  Maybe he’s a former member of the armed forces in a country where regime change has kicked in?  For all I know, the guy is a brain surgeon?  I think my imagination has been a little kinder to him than the opinions of those around me, that’s for sure.  Tax dodger, asylum seeker, benefit tourist; you know the usual Daily Mail gumpf that I have to put up with.  So predictable and….zzzzzz.

So, I have decided to keep a regular eye on my new office hamster, I obviously won’t be taking him home during the Summer holidays, but I will try to post regular updates on Croydon’s new residential survivalist.

Here is a picture of him doing the off over the fence!  Off to lunch with local aristocrats perhaps, or just down to McColls to buy his lottery ticket?  Who knows????

Antikrish ‘Music (not ours)’ category…gone, thanks to youtube copyright killjoys

Well that stinks!

I decided to organise and trim down the Antikrish site categories because it’s been ages since I last tidied things up; I eventually noticed that most of the embedded youtube videos on the ‘MUSIC (NOT OURS)’ category posts were no longer available due to various Youtube copyright infringment.  No wonder I can’t find sod all on there these days!

All my favourite music videos……gone…..what a bag of bastards?!

I decided to delete the category completely and salvage a couple of posts where the video still works; in future I’ll just post music (not mine!) related stuff into my ‘Anti-Rant’ category!

Ravish Sitar Pedal – Electro Harmonix

The tech boys over at Electro Harmonix are gods, for they have produced the holy grail of guitar effect pedals; The Ravish Sitar Pedal.

I was lucky enough to cut my teeth on a few original Electro Harmonix pedals when Alex purchased a few back in the nineties, the Big Muff (fuzz), Polyphase (phaser) and Electric Mistress (flange) were used on a couple of our tracks, ‘The Otherside’ and ‘You Stink’ immediately spring to mind!

I stumbled upon the Ravish Sitar pedal by accident whilst searching the net for an idea that I had for a song; having watched the youtube promo video, I went out and bought myself one along with my own Big Muff whilst out in the States!

For those unfamiliar with the brand or for those of you who are are just starting out to experiement with your guitar sound; I’d really recommend Electro Harmonix pedals because they are the absolute puppies privates when it comes to guitar FX pedals.  They are without a doubt the best made products on the market and are highly customisable to get unique and brilliant variations in sound.

The Ravish Sitar pedal is incredible in what it delivers, you can tweak and set up your sound by Key, delay, modulation.  You can also fiddle with several knobs (technical term!) to adjust the sympathetic settings, lead and delay; all of which can give you very different results indeed!

I got mine out the box, played around with the settings for about 30 minutes with the guitar tuned to C Major and this is the result I got!  As you can see, anyone can sound like a shit Ravi Shankar now!  So go out and buy one immediately!  Antikrish commands it!

Palazzo Casino – Antikrish versus the Machines – 20/10/2011

I promised my Dad 7 years ago that I’d go to Las Vegas and try my luck in the casino’s. SHOW ME THE MONEY!

I remember making a conscious decision to re-evaluated my betting reserve and eventually decided to spend no more than $200 (I originally budgeted for about $600).  As I explained in an earlier post, I didn’t feel ‘lucky’; so I reduced my betting budget accordingly and avoided the card and roulette tables completely.  I reasoned that I’d come back one day in the future and see how I felt then!  Not bad logic for a guy who had drunk an offensive amount of tequila eh?

My favourite slot machine was the ‘Wheel of Fortune’ themed slots, I won about $400-$500 dollars on 4 machines (they are usually grouped in 4’s).  I was pretty wasted from drinking the Margarita’s and not having eaten too much (wasn’t a huge fan of the buffet we went to); however, playing slot machines is pretty instinctive even when I’m inebriated due to the amount of time I spent in Selsey’s seaside arcades. So on I went.

I had a generous win of just over $300 dollars on the ‘Wheel of Fortune machine’ (see video below), the Old Man was definitely with me that night; it’s a shame I didn’t have a 5 at the end of the 3 and 4 (on the reels) as that would have won the house prize; approximately $350,000 dollars.

Lorraine had stopped gambling by that point (after a good flutter on the ‘Sex and the City’ machines) as I think she was watching her cash with view to more shopping and was a bit puzzled by how the machines worked.  So I gave her $20 of my winnings and went onto the ‘Monopoly’ themed machines for her; winning her $98.10 which paid for the pukka ‘Guess’ handbag she had seen at the outlet mall only earlier upon our arrival to Las Vegas.

My last run of luck was winning a couple of hundred dollars on the ‘Star Wars’ machine; I would love to have one in my house, it had some fantastic features and bonuses, plus video and sounds from the films. Artoo Deetoo was my bitch.

So I came away well ‘up’ on the night in terms of my winnings; I had also fulfilled my promise to dear Daddy who had seen me right with my luck.

Thank you Daddy!

End of a journey – homeward bound 25th of October, 2011

So that was our lot.  Amy drove us home via Henderson (Nevada), and we stayed in a Premier Travel Inn Lodge type of hotel on the Saturday night before we headed back home on Sunday.  Amy and Lorraine would not stop giving me crap if I didn’t mention how I dropped a huge jar of salsa onto the hotel reception floor, before throwing a bit of a strop when I thought I was the centre of attention (RAGE!).

Driving back on the Saturday night was a real slog, especially for Amy; we had briefly stopped in the middle of the desert so that Amy could wake up a bit with some fresh air.

The sky was absolutely stunning out in the desert; the total lack of unatural light meant for the best view of the stars that I’d seen since I visited the Breacon Beacon’s in Wales as a kid;  It was beautiful looking up there and seeing thousands of starts, I felt very humble and quite insignificant!

On Sunday we got home at a reasonable time and did our washing, packing and chilled out together which was really nice.  Lorraine and I were very thankful to have been able to visit and go on such a trip.  My final gallery is a few obscure pics!

Hollywood – Saturday, 22nd of October, 2011

So we had about an hour to hit Hollywood, and frankly that was all that I needed as I wasn’t that impressed to be honest!

I enjoyed journeying up to get a cheesy photo opportunity with the Hollywood sign and finding a really cool t-shirt shop and getting a Lynyrd Skynrd shirt; but for the most part Hollywood was…..empty?

It’s difficult to explain as there’s so much going on there, but little substance?  Lots of movie posters struted their stuff around the busy streets, yet I never really saw anything that made me think ‘Wow, I’d like to come back here’.  Perhaps I am not doing Hollywood justice, but that’s just my thoughts.

Hollywood is definitely best kept on the big screen, for me at least!

Rodeo Drive – Saturday, October the 22nd, 2011

Our trip to Rodeo Drive was fun, if only to see Lorraine’s face as she sauntered around pretending to be Julia Roberts in the film ‘Pretty Woman’; this was largely lost on me because I’ve never seen the film!

It was an interesting place, you could eat your dinner off the sidewalk because the area was so incredibly clean and almost devoid of people; probably because of the thinly veiled classism that confronted us when we walked into Tiffany’s.  Deja vu!  Just like being back in NYC!

They quickly changed their tune when they realised that Lorraine meant business and bought a few trinkets before dancing out of the store.  An obligatory shot of Rainy in front of Tiffany’s and hey presto, a happy lady!

Lorraine also popped into ‘Jimmy Choo’ to try on a $600 pair of shoes, I wonder if the same Indian kids make Jimmy Choo’s as Primark shoes?  Answers on a postcard folks?

It was certainly an experience for Rainy, she posed outside the Regent Beverley Wilshire Hotel before dashing to the waiting car so that we could zip off to Hollywood!  How glam?
